Bonsai Alternative: No Monthly Fee, No Per-User Pricing
Bonsai is a nicely designed tool, proposals, contracts, time tracking, invoicing all in one place. For solo freelancers who need all of that, it makes sense. The problem I ran into was the per-user pricing. Once you add even one other person to your account, the cost jumps fast. On top of that, you have to hand over a credit card just to start a trial. And in December 2025, Zoom acquired them, so where the product goes from here is anyone's guess. Track and Invoice covers time tracking, invoicing, and billing client expenses with no monthly fee and no per-seat charges.

Who should choose Track and Invoice
If your main workflow is tracking hours and sending invoices, and you're not looking for proposal templates or contract signing, Track and Invoice keeps things focused without charging you per person. It works well for small teams or solopreneurs billing for time, goods, or both. You can get started without entering a credit card, and there's no trial period to worry about.
Who should choose Bonsai
If proposals and e-signed contracts are a regular part of how you bring on clients, Bonsai builds that into the same tool as your invoicing, which is genuinely convenient. It's best when you're working solo or with one other person, where the per-user cost stays reasonable. Just go in knowing there's a 7-day trial cap and a credit card required up front.
A note on Bonsai's acquisition
In December 2025, Zoom acquired Bonsai. For now it still runs as its own product, but the roadmap is now in the hands of an enterprise company rather than a team that was solely focused on freelancer tooling. That may not matter to you at all, or it might. If you're evaluating tools for the long haul, it's worth factoring in. Track and Invoice is independently run and focused entirely on the time tracking and invoicing side of running a small service business.
Built for the way you work
Running a small business means you feel every dollar, every subscription, every "upgrade to unlock this" moment, every tool that costs more than it should for what it actually does. We felt all of it. Before building Track and Invoice, we were evaluating the same software you're looking at right now, and kept running into the same problem: either the price was hard to justify, or the product was too generic to actually fit the way we worked.
So we built our own. Not to disrupt anything, just to have something functional, honest, and priced like it was made for people who watch what they spend. It turned out other small business owners, freelancers, and solopreneurs were looking for the same thing, so we made it available to them too.
Track and Invoice is straightforward by design. It does time tracking, expense tracking, and invoicing well, without burying those features behind a learning curve or a paywall. If that's what you need, we think you'll feel right at home.
